‘Peace on Earth and Mercy Mild’
This Christmas message, reiterated in other familiar carols that we sang at our fourth Christmas Carol Service, must have expressed the heartfelt wish of all those Bridfas members and many friends who were present on this occasion.
We were able to enjoy again the tranquillity, the repose and feeling of continuity emanating from the ancient walls of the lovely church in Holte, set in the peaceful hills of the Osnabrück countryside.
Pastorin Astrid Bunsemeyer kindly agreed to lead the service again with Ulrich Schlie at the organ. As always the carols, readings and prayers were given not only in German and English but other tongues, too, reflecting the diversity of our membership. The whole was interlaced with the resonant, moving and sometimes haunting quality of the Irish harp, played by Marie Pieck. In contrast, our baritone soloist, Jan Friedrich Eggers, filled the church and lifted our hearts with his joyful and triumphant rendering of ‘Oh Holy Night’.
The beautifully decorated church hall greeted us afterwards with mulled drinks, biscuits and homemade mincepies, which with rose and elderflower liqueur, were also on sale to boost our jubilee fund. Everyone enjoyed the opportunity to have a face-to- face chat in such a relaxing and happy atmosphere.
So many people worked very hard to make such a big success of our Carol Service and on behalf of Bridfas I would like to give you all our warmest thanks.
I should also like to thank everyone who came to take part in the service, including our Mainland Europe advisor, Jane Choy, and husband, who again made the day trip from the Hague to be with us on this very special occasion.
