Anglo-German Christmas Carol Service

Anglo-German Christmas Carol Concert in Holte on 4.12.2013

Members and friends of BRIDFAS Osnabrueck gathered in the lovely church of Holte on the afternoon of December 4th for the Anglo-German Christmas Carol Concert.  The society is carrying on the tradition which was started nearly 50 years ago by the British garrison.

The simplicity of the interior of this lovely, old Holte Church, together  with the atmosphere of harmony and peacefulness, provided a befitting prelude to the captivating solo sung by the young soprano singer (Anna-Lena Menebröcker accompanied by organist Ulrich Schlie) which opened the service. The vicar, Dr. Wiebke Köhler, then led the joyful carol-singing, in English and German, and the Bible readings telling the familiar Christmas story, that followed.

The collection is to be shared between the Cancer Support Group Osnabrück and the fund for church organ repairs in Holte.

’The Holly and the Ivy’  was not among the carols sung, but there was an abundance of both  decorating the church hall, along with red candle-light, a splendid array of home-made mince-pies and biscuits and the waft of spicy toddy which greeted the numerous church-goers after the carol service. It provided a wonderful opportunity to meet up with old friends and chat to new acquaintances in the festive pre-Christmas atmosphere.

St. Nicholas didn't put in an appearance.  He was too bsy preparing for his commitments the next day, but we were very happy to welcome Mrs. Jane Choy, Euorpean Mainland chairperson, who had undertaken the arduous round trip from The Hague to join in this Carol Service, the second organised by Bridfas Osnabrueck.

A very big thank-you goes out to all those who supported us  by providing biscuits, mince-pies, beverages, helping to serve and clear up, or simply attending the carol service.
